I heard a story once about a dilemma that a group of men faced at their church meetinghouse in Germany. They were asked to move a grand piano from the chapel to an adjoining cultural hall for a musical event. They were not professional movers so the task seemed daunting and nearly impossible. Not only would this task require great physical strength, but also careful coordination. There were plenty of ideas on how accomplish the task including arranging the men by strength, height and age while trying to keep the piano balanced properly. They attempted this over and over again, but nothing seemed to work.
As they stood around the piano, perplexed by their dilemma one of the men had an idea. He told the men to stand close together and lift where they stood. It seemed too simple, but when they applied this approach the piano rose from the ground and seemed to move into the cultural hall as if on its own power. The answer to the challenge was for everybody to stand close together and lift where they stood.
There are many “pianos” that REALTORS® face in today’s business and political environment. Alone, those challenges seem overwhelming, if not entirely insurmountable. That is one of the reasons that our REALTOR® associations must remain engaged and united. Together we can help move our “pianos” with collective effort as we lift where we stand.
It has never been a more important time to have leaders who understand this and help organize and encourage REALTORS® to stand close together and lift. Your help is needed at all levels of REALTOR® organizations. National, state and local associations need strong leaders who have broad exposure to critical issues, understand the resources that are available to them and have a network of amazing people they can tap into for help.
